MISSION

The Speech Science Laboratory (SSL) at the University of Hong Kong supports research in the areas of post-laryngectomy speech rehabilitation, static and dynamic quantification of articulatory behavior, objective assessment of various dysarthric speech, normal and pathological aspects of voice production, and objective accent identification, quantification, and modification. Our current research focuses include:

To achieve an acoustics-based, customizable accent reduction regimen based on theories of speech science
To establish articulatory norms among Cantonese speakers by using electromagnetic articulography (EMA)
To develop a hands-free electrolarynx with on/off and lexical pitch control and with more human-like voice quality
To examine the unique language effect on stuttering
To quantify vocal tract configuration using acoustic reflection technology
To investigate post surgical voice among patients with different voice disorders
To study speech comparison techniques on forensic application
